It appears political extortion has won out as a partial solution to address the problem of illegal immigration from Central America. The United States and Mexico will be cooperating closely to convince thousands of potential Central American migrants to not risk the perilous journey to the U.S. border by “investing” American taxpayer money into some of the region’s poorest and most corrupt areas.
Incredibly, the U.S. will depend on corrupt Mexican and Central American politicians to create local economies that will create jobs and personal wealth for poor people. The originators of this idea are ignoring the culture of political corruption that a typical characteristic of Latin America and more so in that region.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said up to $10.6 billion in existing U.S. funding would fund “institutional reform” and “good government” initiatives in Central America to address the political corruption. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised to pull the Central American region and Southern Mexico out of poverty through projects ranging from railways to refineries to planting thousands of hectares of trees…with American taxpayer money.
Ebrard said, and private sector participation would be included in the plan which means the Mexican oligarchy get the money and little will reach the target population. Bribery or "la mordida" is a standard method of conducting business and politics in Mexico and Central America.
The overall idea is to build an economy in southern Mexico and Central America that allows personal wealth to develop and thus encourages people to stay rather immigrate to the U.S. However, it is highly unlikely that the social structures and culture in that region will allow any freedom, political or economic, from developing.
Unfortunately, this is another idea that will reward bad behavior in Latin America by paying off Mexico and Central America to stem the illegal immigration of their citizens. If America rewards bad behavior, it will only get more, and nations will want more money above and beyond the U.S. foreign aid they already receive.
Instead of giving Mexico and Central America money to develop free economies that will create jobs and keep their citizens at home, we should build a wall and secure the border. We should also deport all illegal aliens, end the magnets like free education, illegal employment, and welfare that bring and keep them here, and enforce all immigration laws.
This plan is political extortion paid to the nations that are guilty of illegal immigration. Rewarding them with a "pay off" of taxpayer money will continue the flood of illegal immigrants to our nation.
