In September 2013, the San Antonio City council adopted a lengthy “Non-Discrimination Ordinance” which extended municipal protection from discrimination to cover “gender identity” and “sexual orientation. The ordinance contains language which should be of great interest (and concern) to supporters of small limited government.
I am voicing my opposition to House Bill 2595 which is being proposed by the Texas State House because I feel it is a step toward government silencing the citizens’ right to petition for public vote. I feel this bill would give local governments an unfair advantage over individual citizens. It gives municipalities the right to deny a public vote on citizens’ petitions if the city decides the petition might limit any person’s use of private (real) property for economic gain.
While I fully support an individual’s right to economic gain with their private property, I fear this law will be misused municipal governments.
