On Thursday, July 16, Fox News had Geraldo Rivera in Mexico City reporting on the escape of drug lord “El Chapo” Guzman. He reported that the Mexican government is corrupt but they are making all efforts to recapture Guzman. Say what?
The Mexican government has been corrupt since 1929 when Mexico’s dominant political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI, was founded. The PRI pretends to lead a democratic government while it actually represents an oligarchy of select politicians and business leaders. The PRI has controlled Mexico’s failed economy for decades, while it has fanned nationalism to distract the masses. Routinely, PRI elected officials blame the U.S. for all sorts of Mexican domestic issues like unemployment and crime.
The PRI is the main reason the U.S. has a border that is out of control. They export their problems to the U.S., even encouraging illegal immigration.
On the other hand, U.S. business interests (led by the GOP) have rewarded the PRI with trade agreements like NAFTA. These agreements only “legitimize” PRI corruption and anti-American attitudes.
The Mexican border will not be secured or controlled until the American government recognizes that we cannot continue to reward the PRI nor pretend they are an ally. Fear that Mexico will moved into the influence of an enemy nation must be answered with military strength. We should remind Mexicans, that the Monroe Doctrine kept Mexico free in 1860’s when the French and Austrians wanted to create an empire in Mexico. While the U.S. was locked in the War Between the States, Europeans exercised their will. As soon as the war ended, they Europeans quickly abandoned their plans to avoid conflicts with the U.S. Yes, America saved Mexico’s independence.
The PRI’s strangle hold on Mexico has been briefly interrupted by the National Action Party, or PAN, in 2000-2012. But PRI has returned to dominance and some say with the help of the Crime Cartels. For sure, Guzman’s escape from a maximum security prison certainly raises questions about government corruption.
American officials and taxpayers should understand these facts when discussing illegal immigration and border security. Can you trust and negotiate your home’s security with a corrupt and envious neighbor? Remember, the defense of freedom and liberty starts in your back yard...and that includes your nation’s backyard.
